Beresford, SD | 1/2 and 1/2 makes zero cents to me! If you fed twice as many and backgrounded you’d have twice as many purchase costs to apply towards income from feeder sales. I hope it didn’t take your tax man to make you realize. If you switched from backgrounding to finishing this year it should have been a win/win, you owned the cattle longer in a (mini) bull market! If cattle are all sold and feed was all home grown you should show some pretty decent gains, if not I’m at a loss unless you have some hedge losses coming into play. Your post is pretty abstract......way more coming into play......deferred cattle sales, prepaid expenses, carryover expenses.......dang, I have to spend most of next week in the office, not looking forward to it. As far as cattle go, 2017 is a serious bell ringer!
