Subject: RE: Strip tillers in I states

Ford County, IL

we have strip tilled our corn following beans for 15 years. We think the ground warms up quicker as you are only trying to warm up a 6" strip vs the whole field. We are trying strip till beans this year and will be our 2 year of strip tilling corn on corn. Last year we switched RTK systems so had issues of getting the stalks through. We rented the neighbors VT machine and ran the 2 fields we were doing so we could strip. This year we had an occasional problem of stalks plugging, but our corn head needs rebuilt and is going to get rebuilt before next year. Another thing to look at is time. Our ripper is only 12' and our strip till bar is 30' so we are covering over 2X more ground per pass in the fall. This past year we took the knife off our bar and was able to put 2 wavy coulters in its place and run as a refresher on the strips a day before planting. Made the strips easier to plant into and helped even the emergence. For this coming year, we are planning on applying our UAN with our refresher and putting it on both sides of the row vs in center of row. We have the 1700 gal tank option that montag offers so all we have to do is take the dry box off cart and put the liquid tank on and we are ready to roll.
