In a basic sense. You have to provide 2% up to 2.5% body weight per day. 1000# cow wants to eat 20# of feed. 1200 =24# everyday.

This can be a combination of hay and supplement or just hay. But not just supplement. So even if you can get enough nutrition from 10# of a concentrate feed, the cattle still need 10 to 15 pounds of hay to fill the rumen. Some will say 1 pound of grain equals 2 pounds of hay. Which has some truth from a nutritional sense. But you still have to give them enough to fill the rumen. What mobeefguy is saying this isn't a "concentrate" but is just a feed replacer.

We are not sure how many cows or how big yours are. Or how long the feeding period is. But the numbers don't add up in the sense you are thinking. If you add the 3 tons of feed. You are maybe thinking you will feed 5# per head per day? So you have 120 cow days of feed. 30 cows for 4 months. But you still have to have the other 15 to 20# of feed they will need everyday. Or maybe you are feeding it at 10# per day. But it will become cost ineffective at high rates.

Reading through your post. Let's say a half bale is 400# per day. You would have to feed 400# per day of this feed to make up the shortfall. Maybe you could get by with the 2# grain = 1# of hay. Then you are feeding 200# of grain supplement per day. But this isnt a concentrated feed. More like a feed replacement on a pound for pound basis. So you have enough supplement for 15 days. That's why guys are thinking you'd be better off buying the 1/2 bales of hay × 120 days = 60 more rolls of hay. In this scenario. Or else you need to go buy 105 more days supplement.

Just using some basic examples here. Nothing precise.
