Subject: RE: Those of you with sand bedded freestalls

Dave, we installed something similar about 20 years ago. They were made from old tires and now some are breaking down and in need of replacement. I can't find anyone who makes our original sand traps. The ones in your pictures look like a better product, could you tell me who manufactures them? Have you had any problems with the cows working them up if not installed deep enough? Our experience is, there's a fine line between too deep and not deep enough. Not deep enough and they work them up, too deep and they will be ineffective. We have a 100 cow barn and a few were installed too deep, the sand usage in those stall is about 60 to 70% higher than those installed properly. I feel these are a must, especially if you don't have a sand recovery system.
