Subject: RE: Newish Case IH corn heads

Bought the head new and had trouble with it feeding right off the bat especially in brittle stalked corn. Would not feed decent so took ear savers off which helped. Appeared to me gathering chains were coming around and grabbing stalks before it entered the spirals therfore causing "bunching". Bought a couple Kaler Farms Stalk Guides (look up on internet) to try out and seemed to help enough that I ordered enough for all rows. Complained to mechanic and salesman thru out season and told them what I thought was wrong. Mechanic agreed that he thought deck plates were too long, covering part of spirals thus preventing stalks to enter properly. Called before harvest the following fall wanting me to try his solution...no charge. Vise gripped metal template on deck plate and cut about a 45 degree angle off with plasma cutter. Took about a half hour to do my 6 row head. Huge difference......put all ear savers back on with NO problems since. Don't know if "Mother Case" was involved or something mechanic dreamed up on his own. It did the trick because I could re-install the ear savers that I paid for with the head to begin with!!!! Dealer was Scherrmanns Impl. in Dyersville,Iowa
