Glasgow, Ky | I would hate to be without one but they can be dangerous. Have had at least 2 injuries from them in the past. Both times following even basic safety procedures would have prevented them. Experience has taught me the following. If you know the jack handle can fly up unexpectly under load then dont stick your head where the handle can hit it. If the load is unstable when lifted don't put all you weight on the jack trying to lift it because when the load leaves the ground it can shift and the jack flies out and hits you in the shin causing significant pain and eventually giving thanks it did not break your leg.
They can be dangerous but you just have to be smarter than the jack. I am learning but am not there yet.
