Lancaster County, Pa | Milk,meat/bone are high in phosphorus....So dairies are exporting a lot of phosphorus. Years ago research looked at that and said we need to feed lots of phosphorus as supplement. Now research says there is enough coming from feed sources, don't supplement additional P.
So with the more efficient ways of modern feeding, coupled with the double crop rye, corn silage program, soil P levels are actually coming down in this area for dairy....
So the only way to increase soil P in today's dairy, is to import more by purchasing feed than what you're exporting with milk and bone...One disadvantage of the mega dairy is how distant the feed source can become and the tendency to over apply manure to nearer fields.
"Here"Where there was a layer chicken house, that is were you can find astronomical P numbers... But anymore anyone with poultry exports nearly all their manure | |
