Subject: Re: breaking sod

south east SD
I just did a 25 acre pasture (06) that I had bought 5 years ago, Got tired of a cheap skate who would not spray it and he had very cheap rent!! It was pasture as long as I can remember. Went in and sprayed it in the fall with round-up and that was wrong thing to do !! If I had to do all over again I would spray in the spring when it's warm and green and growing. I had a custom guy spray mine in the fall late and it did not do a good job of killing the grass. He got the 2nd application of round-up free but I paid again for the application in the spring and it did very good. Then hired a JD no-till drill and planted beans right in the sod. Where I cleaned up rock, I chiseled the ground for more rock then field cultivated it flat and drilled over it. Most my beans went 50 to 55 and the pasture went 45!! I was very happy. This fall I went in with a 512 dick ripper to dig up rock and to smooth and level the field. Next year field cultivate and plant to corn.
