By then they're big enough they could be getting bred - as bulls are still out with the cows. So rather than risk that and have calves out in mud fighting for feed around bale rings they go in a lot and I get them on grain and silage. Cows are then left on dry hay, and will recoup for winter, put them on silage a couple months from calving and then have calves mar/apr - grass is ready again mid may and calves are a good size to hit the grass. | |
