Guymon, OK | We've got a MX270 with ~10,400 hours. It was a money pit well before 8000 hours. It currently has a terrible hydraulic leak under the cab (not the first one), and a persistent transmission fault that I think has something to do with the clutch position sensor as there is no feathering the clutch pedal; it's either all or nothing. There is also something not quite right about the hydraulic remotes, but the problem is hard to explain, which makes it hard to diagnose. We've had problems with the dreaded CAPS pump before, but changing the filters regularly and not running it out of fuel helps keep that part alive.
The thing is, our 270 gets a lot more than 250 hours per year. If you can find one in good shape and don't beat the tar out of it, it might last a long time. It's still hard for me to recommend a first generation MX. The second gen (MX285) has a few improvements, but there are a lot of things they didn't start doing right until the third gen (MX305). The third gen uses an ISOBUS system instead of a bunch of stand-alone controllers, which greatly improved the reliability of the electronics. | |
