Subject: RE: Case Ih Mx ,Good,Bad and Ugly?

Central, WI
At least a dozen Mx models around here that have come thru my small independent shop. Used for almost everything from heavy pto work to loader and mixer wagons. Anywhere from 3000 to 24,000 hours on them. Main items I noted over the years was good power, fuel efficiency and way better cabs with better visibility over previous models. Heavier frames with more weight over previous models also. Heavier front axles in later models also that stood up to loader work and heavy ballasting.

Now a few negatives but nothing major if maintained by the book of more often. Some did not get along well with the CAPS pump but that was mainly due to operator inattention during start-up. Yes, Case could have designed it to be idiot proof but did not. Best cure for that was to turn the key 30 seconds before ignition. It primed the whole system properly and saved the pump over time. 9000 hours on some here with no issues doing that. Mechanical pump updates kits were around $8,000 and some customers went that route after a CAPS failure. One's prior to 105,000 s/n needed some updated wiring also. Center drive shaft U-joint failures on models over 180hp was common on half of them in the first 3000 to 5000 hours. Front axle seals, pins and sun/ring gears needing rebuild were less common on a couple, due to higher hours with no oil change.

With one in the 8000 to 10000 hour range, look for good maintenance history on it to be sure. Motor and tranny was fairly reliable.
