That is an excellent point.
The way I see it, yes, the government has better, more powerful tools at their disposal. BUT 300,000,000 plus guns in private hands (not counting un registered) is a pretty darn good force of defense. Not to mention if it DID come to that, much of the military servicemen would side with the citizens.
Reminds me of the phrase "there would be a gun behind every blade of grass"
