Pilot is not a pattern.

H controls is a pattern.

ISO controls is a pattern.

There are different types of hydraulic valves.

Mechanical Valves - you move the hydraulic valve directly.

Electro-Hydraulic Valves - you move an electric joystick. A computer actuates electric solenoids. Electric Solenoids move the valve.

Pilot Valves - you move tiny little hydraulic valves with the joystick. Those tiny little valves move tiny little pistons. Those tiny little pistons move the main valve. The tiny little pistons are all built into the main valve. Pilot controls give you the feedback and instant response of mechanical valves, but save your wrists like electro-hydraulic valves. There's also no computer to deal with.
