I watched on TV a report on the rotisserie chicken at the big stores. They sell ALOT of them, I mean ALOT of them . It is a major sales number leader to get folks into the store. If they make any money on them at the price they sell them for........................
Costco alone apparently sells 80 million rotisserie chickens per year at $4.99/bird.
Another reason for this plant is that Costco wants more control over their supply. They want birds that cook down to about 3 lbs final weight. One of the articles said that the industry has been moving toward larger birds, and Costco was having trouble sourcing enough birds of the desired size.
I don't know how much corn and soybeans 80 million of those little birds will eat per year, but it has got to be a lot.
Another interesting note was that the estimated economic impact of the chicken plant and it's supply barns will amount to 1% of Nebraska's entire current economy. I realize that economic forecasts like that have a lot of "multiply effect" and "fudge factor" calculations, but I'm excited to have that kind of a boost to the region. |
