Von I think you touched on the reasons why they aren't mounted forward like you want. It's not as fool proof. Lots of steering wheel holders out there. You being the only one using it and being careful I see no reason it won't work. The newer landoll disks have a gauge wheel facing forward on the outer wings to do just like you think, stop the front corners from gouging. Forward facing should work just fine for your purposes.
