I wish I had all the answers. For me, today, I think I'm low cost producer based on breakevens I hear on this site. Everything I do is based on efficiency. Eliminate equipment that's not needed. Retrofit autosteer on an older, low hour tractor. Custom finish hogs and treat the manure like gold. Sell corn back to integrator for better basis (they even let me load it on their feed trucks when they deliver feed as a back haul so I get free freight). Still work full time (health insurance taken care of and no living expenses out of the farm).
I don't have all the answers but the next generation of commodity farmer is going to have to know/learn how to weather the storm for the next 2-7 years (in my opinion....and I can easily prove I'm wrong a lot).
Spoken with the ambition and attitude of a young man. Not putting you down at all. It's just after awhile, you start asking yourself why am I knocking myself out. As you can tell by my attitude, I'm at the other end of the age spectrum. I guess after a point you've gotten enough experience and had enough fun (and frustrations) to realize there are easier ways to make the same amount of money.
