EC SoDak | This isn’t completely the new normal, but it’s closer than many probably assume. This year I will credit a long cool period with good moisture for grain fill for the yields I’m seeing. But a lot of investments have been made in ground, equipment, seed, soil testing, ext. so, my thoughts are unless you have major major weather events, the typical year to year floor was raised quite a ways along with the top end. I speak with some of the older farmers who’ve been around a while, and they claim todays hybrids handle heat much better during pollination for the most part. Not always, but in general. They’ll list off a bunch of examples of how things have improved.
I was actually the one in the convo saying this wasn’t the new normal, but it is interesting that all of a sudden a 165 crop is just an avg crop when that would have been huge not too long ago. How many years have been 160 national yield and above?
I had some more I was going to say, but something came up, I’ll chime in some more later as time allows.
