There is a lot of good dirt on the fringe, just like!e there is marginal dirt throughout the cornbelt. Good crops can be grown in places that you may not think are 'traditional' or acceptable to grow corn and beans. If their land cost or rent stays lower than through the I states, I wouldn't bet against their competitiveness .
