That is a hematoma from fighting. Is full of blood and if you cut it and don't fix it right it will lead to a swiveled up ear. It is an easy fix for a vet and 500.00 is outrageous.  Now I said fighting but could be an ear infection or ear mites too. Did he sling his head a lot before this happened and scratch?
