Keep in mind that Deere is big into ductile iron parts, just look at their planter unit. Ductile iron will bend and not break. Nearly as strong as cast steel at a lot less cost. Yes I agree grey cast iron would not be a good idea but the ductile iron would be pretty tough to beat. will also give the feed chain some badly needed weight to pull the crop mat in.
