The manufacturers started doing that because they'd get warranty complaints depending upon where the needle ran in the normal range. If it was a tick lower than the middle of the normal range, people would complain the oil pressure was "low." Or if the coolant temp guage ran toward the high side of the normal range they'd say it was overheating. Well the mfgrs "fixed" that.
