Ours is always like that, don't think that is the reason for bad cutting. I can't remember exactly, but we modified the last gaurd on our 1020 head somehow. I think it had a stub gaurd or something on the end and we rigged it up with a regular gaurd and a knife section instead of the dull 1/2 section
