Subject: Re: New cast iron feederhouse bars for the STS???

At a recent AG show in Brandon, MB, the John Deere booth had a video of the new feeder house in the test lab. They played that thing over and over and over. In the test lab, they set up a feeder house, powered it, ran it and shoved in a block of wood with a large steel rod on top of it. Sparks flew as the feederhouse bars caught the rod and block. The feederhouse chains came to a very sudden stop with nothing bent or broken, as the slip clutch made alot of noise. The bars and chain are supposed to hold up. The real beauty of that new feederhouse, is the way the chains and bars and front drum are held down onto the bottom of the feederhouse. The previous models held the chain down tight as the front drum would be allowed to move up and down with the crop flow. This caused alot of stress to the chains, causing early failure especially in heavy swaths of canola. When the chain started to stretch the bars came loose. This new design allows the chain to move up and down with the front drum. The rails that hold the chain down are attached to the front drum. I believe that the new chains are also heavier, as are the bolts holding on the bars. That T.V. and video were a very popular stop at the show.
