SE MN | I have an older gas tractor that the exhaust manifold couldn't be just plained because it was so severely pitted, so I used some Permatex Ultra Copper sealer on it to seal it up. I used that because of the high temp's at the head to exhaust manifold area and this was the highest temp stuff I could find. So far so good, have put a decent number of hours on it now and no problems. I figured I was not out too much and cheaper than the cost of a new manifold.
