It's the evaporative cooling. You can pump 50 degree water on a 35 degree night and there will be a lot of ice buildup by morning.

I shut my pivots off when temps are forecast to be below 40. If it's close I'll check the temp at 2am and maybe go shut things down. If it got to about 36 or less and the pivots with overhead sprinklers ran all night, you go check things in the morning with one eye closed because you're afraid to look.
