Subject: RE: Silage Appraisals

Well basically I pick 4 different areas of the field and take 1/1000 of an acre ( 17'5" for 30" rows ) and then pull every ear and shuck it and weigh it with digital scale.
Then I have to figure what the stage of maturity is and enter the 4 weights on an appraisal sheet. Then there is a pre determined math equation I use with the weights and maturity to come up with yield.
Here is an example of one today.
13.2# 16.1# 9.0#
those were the 3 test weight I gathered. You add those 3 together and come up with 38.3. Now on the appraisal sheet it says to take that total and multiply it by 7.463 since the corn was in 1/2 maturity stage
38.3 x 7.463 = 285.8
Now you take your total and divide by the number of samples.
285.8 /3 = 95.2 b/a
Not sure where they come up with the multiplication factor. It is already on our sheet we use. Here is the breakdown of what to use for different stages of maturity.
1/2 maturity = 7.463
3/4 maturity = 8.000
Doughy = 8.476
Extended = 10.638
Hope this helps
