It is better way at black layer, but by that time harvest is so near, so might just as well wait for the combine and trucks.
At best it dries half a point a day here. At black layer we are a month minimum out from shelling any corn. I'd much rather do my yield checks when it's accurate than waste my time doing a ton well before black layer. Very few people shell corn over 20% here. Especially with low $3 corn.
Right now I can tell you within 20% one way or another what every field of corn we have will make without stepping in the field and thats all the more accurate you will be doing kernel counts....
