Subject: RE: Insulating a heated floor.

Leesburg, Ohio
I definitely wanted the rigid insulation on the outside, and it works great. Keeps the stem wall from losing heat, so the above-grade part of the stem wall does not become a giant cold-radiator to the inside. We used 1-1/2" Styrofoam on the outside of the wall, and above the outside of the footer, and ran the outside steel down over the Styrofoam, and then flashed down to below grade under the steel with colored flashing to match. Keeps the rodents away, and all the heat in, and the 1-1/2" insulation matches the 2x4 purlins so the steel and flashing comes straight down.

We insulated under the floor, but only the outside 4'. That provides additional protection against losing heat to the outside ground, but leaves the still-warm ground in middle of the floor open as a heat sink. Since the insulated building covers it, that middle ground should stay at a fairly even 50 degree temp year-round. We only heat the floor to about 70 or less. So we figured there would not be too much loss, and the 70 degree ground under the floor would furnish that heat back to the building for a few days in the event of an outage. Seems to work fine, and the heat bills are very reasonable.
