| The land-based operations in the Pacific war were predominantly from Marston matting until much more time was available to consolidate islands that had been taken, and by the time those improvements were made the campaign was on to the next island and the process started all over. This didn't really change until the advent of the B-29, and the first runways they attacked Japan from out of China were built by hand with thousands of Chinese coolies. And runways of the modern, 36" concrete sort didn't really happen until the B-36, B-47 and B-52 truly heavy bombers came about in the postwar era.
