| The acetone and ATF is known on this forum as Hogan's Brew. Its hard to keep in a container unless the container and spray pump is all metal. Acetone is a strong plastics solvent often used for solvent welding of plastic assemblies and it is very volatile. Its hard to keep in a glass chemical supply jar that it has come in.. It is sold in most hardware store paint departments.
It came to the world from an article in Home Shop Machinist several years ago. That article compared a bunch of commercial products to the ATF/acetone mix. They made up steel rods with pieces of steel plate drilled to fit the steel rods snugly and hit the steel assembly samples with a commercial salt spray. Then measured the force required to separate the steel pieces with nothing, and an assortment of penetrating oils including WD-40, Liquid Wrench, PG Blaster, Kroil, and the ATF/Acetone mix. As i recall WD-40 barely had any effect, Liquid Wrench was slightly better, PB Blaster was workable, Kroil was the far best commercial product but the ATF/Acetone mix was significantly better than Kroil and easier to acquire. Kroil isn't cheap, but it does work well. I haven't tried the ATF/Acetone brow because I have Kroil on hand. Many on this forum have found the ATF/Acetone brew does work well.
