I have an idea, but it may have its disadvantages also.

Have you thought about axle brakes on your round baler? (Something like 3" x12" or the size similar to big 650 bu gravity wagons)

Too much heat would be the disadvantage, for a baler, but you only mentioned about 1/4 mile, then they would have a chance to cool (going uphill, again), but at a 1/4 mile downhill, they might only get warm.
