Had similar problems on my 1660 and 2188 when they were new to us.
Decided the problem was cobs and other debris getting thrown forward and causing trouble.
I added about a foot onto the rubber flaps around the spreader.
That took care of the problem for us.
2188 spreader drive belt doesn't want to stay on
