Subject: RE: Ford 8n,9n,2n

Besides the different transmissions where in all of them the PTO shaft is an extension of the idler shaft of the propulsion transmission so its absolutely necessary to have an overrunning clutch when mowing with any PTO powered mower because the inertia of the mower will continue to drive the tractor forward with the clutch pedal pushed.

The front distributor is a pain to work on but fairly reliable.

The steering gears are different. The 9N and 2N use bevel gears like rear axle gears and hitting a clod kicks the steering wheel hard because the gearing efficiency is the same for inputs from the steering wheel or the wheel on the ground. The 8N uses a ball worm and that isolates clod kicks from the driver.

The 8N is the better tractor of the three, the last year has the side mounted distributor whic is a lot easier to maintain.

The MF 30 and 135 are about the same size with twice the weight and HP and really do work many times better than the N. I had an 8N, it was a toy for plowing and for snow moving. The MF-135 I have will do real on farm jobs without hurting the driver like the 9N and 2N.
