Dalton, OH | I will agree that I farm extremely variable soils, especially given that a lot of it is rented and you never know how it was taken care of before you get it. I will also say I farm some pretty good dirt given that I can consistently raise 6+ton alfalfa with 150+RFV and 25%+ protein levels. Even on this dirt by moldboard plowing the hay and applying manure I have trouble getting the Bird to have a decent test weight. In this situation this past year I had a Bird variety with a TW of 52 and a DK one test 57. Planted the same time, same conditions, same field, but the Bird outyield the DK by 5 bu per acre. The Bird was 3 points wetter though, and after figuring all of my costs I was more profitable with the DK stuff, but not by much. (The DK seed was cheaper as is the case this year) Leon is a great person and really knows his stuff and that's one thing I don't get with the DK stuff. |
