Subject: RE: round baling dry alfalfa - number of wraps setting at reduced pto speeds

Driftless SW Wisconsin

JD Farmering - 6/7/2017 15:52 Not true. I have a 459 and it puts the 2.1 wraps on no matter what speed I run the PTO. It has the sensors on the clutch, and one of the rolls to count rpm's and the monitor compensates for the correct wraps. So just what JD baler were you running?

Sorry but it is true. I have a JD569. On page 40-24 of the operator's manual is a chart (which I missed when I switched from twine to netwrap) which starts out:

"If machine is operated at less than rated PTO speed, use the following chart as a guideline for desired wraps."

The chart shows if operating at 1500 engine rpm (which is roughly where I run) use a setting of 2.9 to achieve an actual 2.0 wraps and a setting of 4.3 to achieve an actual 3.0 wraps.

With a monitor setting of 2.0 wraps and engine rpm of 1500 I was getting an actual 1.5 or 1.6 which was not sufficient and started coming off as I carried the bales out of the field. That's when I discovered the need to correct for lower than 540 rpm pto speed.

In my hills and turns I don't run at very fast forward speeds when baling. I don't need the bale to be churning at high speeds in the bale chamber.

I raked some tedded hay yesterday. The windrows were very large in most areas. I don't need high speeds in this stuff and terrain and point rows and turns. This is what I'll be baling today after the dew and a few sprinkles burn off. I'm going to try a roll of JD's Coveredge wrap on these and run at higher bale pressure/lower rpm. The wide pickup on the 569 will get a workout on these windrows.
