The spikes you see are simply tremors preceding the actual big event. I am not smart enough to tell you when the big event happens, but have read up enough on the current monetary system to know that we have entered the exponential phase of debt creation and money printing and that physical hard assets including gold will trump any paper backed asset as we start to enter the other side of the curve.

By the way, I would not look at inflation adjusted charts, especially over the last 30 years. Central banks now completely control inflation/deflation and can make this number appear to be whatever they would like it to be.
