Aurelia, Iowa | Those farm groups (that I also belong to) have become self serving organizations dedicated to their self preservation. The very policies that are proposed to be cut are nothing more than short sighted band aid fixes that guarantee a certain amount of income, that in turn causes rents and land prices to rise and eventually winds up hurting profitability in the long run. Judging by the responses there seem to be more farmers that feel as I do that the farm safety net has become a crutch and needs to be eliminated. By the way my 25 year old son who is just starting to farm feels the same way that I do. Instead of helping young guys like him get started, the farm program is an impediment because it keeps guys farming well into their 70's and 80's by guaranteeing them their income. Maybe it's time for a new farm organization to represent our views. | |
