Subject: Distillers syrup

Went to the sale today and watched a guy sell two loads of 9wt late cut steers. They were pretty good calves, but were in absolutely perfect flesh. My jaw dropped, one calf after another, every one of them in perfect condition. I asked the guy how long he had been feeding them and he said 90 days. He told me he fed them distillers syrup free choice. I live in the land of whiskey distilleries, so syrup is real cheap here. He told me it used to cost him about 5-7000 to feed a load of calves for 60-90 days, now his feed costs are less than half that. What's everyone's option on free choice syrup, with a roll of hay left out and plenty of pasture. Seems like everyone has a different opinion on the syrup, but after seeing those cattle today I think I am a believer.
