You must be planting some poor germ seed John. Remember just because the bag says 90% germ doesn't mean it can't be 99%. 90 is the limit for any beans I have ever planted. I can plant treated beans at 1.5 inches and get 95-100% of them up. This idea of having to see some beans on top is old school. With today's planters you shouldn't see any on top. Have planted some at 2+ before in extreme heat and been out of the ground in four days. This year so far I have been planting 1.25-1.5 depending on soil type but have good moisture.
