Subject: RE: soybean Planting depth

SW Iowa
Same here. Had more trouble with them too shallow, not in good moisture, then too deep. The hypocotyl pulling the cotyledon upward has tremendous strength to push up against the biggest dirt clod or crust. I have seen them pop the cotyledon off in the process of pushing up to the surface in hard, crusted soil, resulting in death. They don't push without moisture and warmth. Same with corn. it needs warmth and moisture to push out.. Old timers say you cannot plant corn too deep...I have often wondered which pushes harder--corn or soybean. Perhaps the corn has more stamina to push longer than a soybean, that will give up after a few days.
