Subject: TY drops i built, plans for 2017

Morris, IL
I have got lot of emails about my Y drops i built. I'm working on building a set for 2017 today after another 1" rain. I'll try break this down what i can so anyone that wants to built there own can no problem.

Start with materials. The bracket is a threaded pipe type conduit, i think it's 1" but not 100% what it called. I used 3/4" sch. 40 PVC so just match the OD to any piece of pipe ID is all i did, menards had both in stock. You could go bigger if wanted, just play with how much flex they have compared to your boom. 1" PVC would probably work with heavier duty booms. The Y fitting is a called a side outlet elbow and i only found them online, make sure it's sch. 40 not furniture grade. I use 1/2" sprayer hose for drop but guy can use anything he wants as long as OD matches closely to the PVC or other arrangements are made. Tubing is 3/8", like the stuff used for fertilizer lines and air bags just bigger. PVC glue and cleaner. Some 08 hose clamps. Some 1" sprayer hose cut to 1" pieces and slit for the stop and some more hose clamps forget the size.

Bracket your on your own, not hard to rig something up just make sure the ID stays clear top to bottom. You can cut the drops whatever you want. I'm working on a 5' drop which includes about 1' in the mount so only about 4' below the boom. You want to at least 1' off the boom, maybe 1.5'. I run them 6" off the ground give or take. I cut the Y pieces 12", perfectly standing corn and good size corn i think could go 15". I don't see point to it, hoses run next to plant as is with 12" so i'm leaving them there. Might even go bit smaller if your using more rigid hose or larger hose. I use sawsall to slot the end of the Y pipes which allows the 08 hose clamp to tighten down on the hose just enough to hold it. I ran few acres with nothing never lost one either. I cut the hose to 4', might seem plenty long but it doesn't hurt anything and helps smooth things out. The 3/8" tubing needs to run darn near to the end of the sprayer hose and i need 3' on top hanging out to get to boom fittings without pulling it too much.

So the 1/2" sprayer hose doesn't run top to bottom, it just from the the side outlet fitting and after. The 3/8" is what is actually delivering the 32%. There is no fitting between them just run the 3/8" clear to the end of the sprayer hose.

Putting them together you want to cut everything including the sawsall slot and clean all joints. Put the hose into the Y pipes flush give or take. Then insert the 3/8" tubing. Then pull the 3/8" through the Y fitting and glue. Then the drop pipe last. This might seem like non needed instructions but they kind of have to go together certain way or won't work. You will screw up few, materials are pretty cheap so get few extra.

Disclaimer. I have only ran then 120 acres so far last year. They worked great but who know maybe this year they will fall apart, not my fault. I used a set of 6'6" drops last year in tassel corn, i only went about 4-5mph as they started to not pull steady beyond that point. I think shorter drops will work better. I'm hoping to stay at 5mph and get little more steady pull through the field. I only have 500 maybe 1k acres to do, i don't expect them to last more then a year. They are cheap enough just built new set.

I hope this makes sense way i explained everything, anyone that makes them work be sure to post back here as i'd like to see them work. I know AVPMatt was talking about setting them up on just pull type sprayer to use as sidedress rig, i think that's great idea. I have them on a small SP sprayer, like to run them V10 give or take. Think we'll be doing some twice and some not at all just depending on how much we sidedress NH3. I like having options to sidedress and feel this is a good one. Already own sidedress NH3 bar, friend of mine has a Hagie NTB i can borrow or hire if needed if all else fails. NH3 is 515 a ton today and UAN is costing 268 i think for planter so there is a cost disadvantage to UAN sidedress but between cost of putting it, stress it puts on me, and damage it's worth considering. I can tip toe with my sprayer much better, i run about 1/10 gallon fuel spraying, and so much easier on the nerves at least for me. Questions just ask.

For some reason when i turn the pictures it cuts them off.
