custar ohio | We are on our 3rd 1990. All have been 40' on 7.5" centers. We run both wheat and beans through it.
Cons definitely include the controlled spill seeding method. I cuss it every spring but at harvest we see ZERO yield difference to our other bean planters.
Do not let it sit in the rain or let beans get damp in the flutes. You will only let that happen one time.
The JD monitor sucks at wheat pops. I would not own one without a scales. Also get an all run monitor. They can plug after the Y and one row will not plant although you may think it is. Don't ask how I know. They are a PITA to grease.
The pros are many. It floats over soft ground better than any other planter. I do like the dual wing wheels for that. I have spare rims with tires for quick flat changes. Run the vac pressure towards the high end of the range and use plenty of talc to prevent plugging. Have your rows numbered at the venturi and the Y splits to help find the plugs. Keep all string and seed treatment chunks out of the system. It can plant into conventional tilled to no till situations without a lot of changes.
Overall, one of the most productive pieces on the farm. | |
