We have 10" and we like it. It makes the drill easier to work on and it goes in the ground better when it gets hard. We plant wheat also, and was kind of concerned when we first got it if it would be as good ad narrower rows. Been 6 years now, and cant say it has even hurt yields in wheat.
We have a 36' with duals on the wings. I think you could probably get by without, but dont know, especially on a 40'.
