thanks kipps, have you seen where that pipe is fitted to the axle housing and more important, where does it end?
if it ends in the left hand corner, could it actually suck air as the oil level drops on that side, on a hill?? a mechanic told me the other day to keep the oil level over full, and it kind of helps!!!

about the brakes, the diff lock is not stuck permanently, but could it somehow engage when I push the right brake only??
