I have found that if I get the tube threaded in one turn and I push the plunger in before tightening it primes better. When I was having trouble midway through a tube I wasn't storing them vertically. When I started storing them vertically I had a lot less problems.
If this doesn't help try a different brand of grease and see if that makes a difference.
