| livestock left this farm 15 years ago, but prior to that it was a big part of diversification of the operation for many many decades. cattle and hogs boith.
feeding cattle has always been boom bust, those in the business admit that pretty regularly. cow/calf guys are grind it out with humps and dips being the norm.
so what you are referring to is nothing more than a big boom and big bust cycle. kinda like $8 corn. Prior to that we thought $5 was living high on the hog no pun intending
there is a reason livestock left this operation. the diversification became less beneficial and the risk/reward and sacrifice wasn't worth it
row crop has become so efficient that diversification of an operation looks different today. even guys that still use livestock as diversification do it much differently than 20 years ago.
I am not arguing that some guys got bit, but just because they are "livestock" guys doesn't mean they get a pass for making risky decisions and losing.
