SW MN Fulda | JDPlowboy.... I have been trying to think of other ways of making good money on what we have....am always open to hearing any other ideas people have.
We do our own spraying currently. We don't buy wholesale fertilizer, as i'm not sure what the numbers are on investment and income potential. We just started strip tilling this past fall. Thought about a strip till rig but its hard to own one when they are only charging $12/acre to custom strip till...Could do some custom work but theres a lot of the coops that rent out a rig so not sure how much work there would be for us... Plus we would have to buy another tractor more than likely so we could make sure all the harvest work gets done in the right time frame....so cost on strip till rig plus a tractor? not sure what the return would be....I've wanted to get our own tiling setup but the ol man isn't to excited about the idea. He hates mud with a passion haha... Soil and tissue testing is something we are going to try to start doing ourselves in the near future though as we can see those $ being saved.
The main ingredient for the liquid feed would be the stillage/syrup blend from the ethanol plant. You could use only stillage/syrup and the 20% dry feed with the vitamins and goodies in and be ok. We were adding ice cream and also a type of liquid whey. The ice cream i'm sure costs very little if anything and then just the trucking. and the whey might be the same thing as its just waste product that those plants need to get rid of. Not sure what the stillage costs are plus trucking. If you would be interested in learning more about it, I can get you the contact info for they guy i fed for.
I do like taking care of hog barns, however, i don't know if i would like to work in a dry fed barn anymore as dusty as they are in there. liquid fed there is very minimal dust, and that seems like a luxury haha.
Plus, I was getting paid $9/hd where i was at. thats hard to beat. $100/day for 4000 hd site was a nice income i'm trying to replace without going to work in town. Thats where i figured get my own barn up and be able to make 45-50k off the manure depending on years, would be a good way to go.
Interested in hearing more thoughts and opinions..Thanks! | |
