Chebanse, IL..... | mn2 Once in a while the older/smaller plows will have trouble. The older coulters weren't as adjustable, or may be greatly worn down. Often the hitches on the older plows and/or smaller tractors allow the plow hitch to drag on the surface because we're plowing deeper than they were really intended for. If the field is large enough, they often try to run the 1,2, & 3 btm tractors on one side, & the faster or newer 3-5 btm plows on the other side. But, the dragging hitch causes stalks to bunch & then the plow will ride up & that allows everything to plug. When a 80 yr old plow follows a 40 yr old plow there is a difference in the depth they can operate. You do your best to make them work out. Some guys that do like to plow @ 12"+ can cause a lot of trouble. Same w/18-20" cuts.....doesn't work well when an old 14" plow follows them. Il John asked about speed matching. Same thing. If room allows, smaller (= slower) tractors/plows in one land, faster/newer in another land. Yes, most of the 4010/20 type tractors have to throttle back, then you pass the guy on the headland if you're faster. Also, you watch for the driver in front to hold up his arm as a STOP motion when someone has plugged, broken down, or come unhooked (old trip-hitch plows) & has come to a stop. It all works out & it's a lot of FUN! Everyone needs a plow day. It's not like you're out there for 10+ hrs straight any longer. 3-5 hrs & you're loading up to go home. |
