Layout one side the way you want it, use a grease pencil to draw on the paint as is for a guideline for tape. Use 3M fineline striping tape for clean edges.
PPG wax and grease remover will EASILY wipe off grease pencil marks.
After you have it taped, then use wide 3M body mask paper or brown craft paper, cover your taped layout with it, mask tape it in place to temporarily secure, then use a dark colored kids crayon, peel off the paper cover and then go over the tape edges with the side of crayon using light pressure. This will leave a dark edge from the tape edge. Now remove the mask paper, and cut out your edges, flip it over / reverse and the colored side to paint of other side of vehicle , tape to secure in proper placement, use grease pencil to trace, then tape off the other side, with the 3M fineline and then mask from there.
You will only need to do this where all the curves and scallops are, the front 1/3 or so, the rest are straight lines and can be measured out, and should be able to match up and help to align when moving the original template to other side.
Does this take time...yes, but beats doing both sides from scratch.
Great idea!!!! Thanks!!!! |
