Subject: RE: Question About Irrigation Along the Rio Grande

Yeah, I did not know what tiling was until I read this forum, we sure could use all that water y'all drain out of your fields.

Some of the Rio Grande water comes from the Closed Basin Project. I drove up the San Luis Valley early January, it was strange seeing water pouring out of pipes into canals in the middle of winter.

It's mostly alfalfa here, with a little corn.  They grow pinto beans on the other side of the mountain, pivot irrigation with mined water.  Some of the alfalfa farmers have planted pecan trees, we are now 3rd largest pecan producing state.

I had alfalfa, levelled field last October and planted triticale.  Got it in right before irrigation water was cut off.  Should replant alfalfa in July. depends on northern reservoir storage.
